Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
I'm new to Linux. Where should I start?
Welcome to the world of Linux! The best place to start is with a distribution known for being user-friendly and having a large, helpful community. We highly recommend either Ubuntu or Linux Mint as the perfect entry point.
I'm coming from Windows. What will feel familiar?
Switching can feel like a big step, but many Linux distributions are designed to make you feel right at home. Zorin OS is famous for its Windows-like interface, making it an incredibly smooth transition. For more options, our curated Migration Pack includes several great choices for former Windows users.
Can Linux breathe new life into my old computer?
Yes! This is one of Linux's superpowers. Many "lightweight" distributions are designed to run beautifully on older hardware, making them fast and responsive again. If you have a computer that's a decade old, or even one with as little as 512MB of RAM, we have a solution for you.
Can I try Linux without installing it?
Absolutely. Almost every distribution we offer includes a "Live Mode." This lets you boot and run a full Linux desktop directly from the DVD or USB stick, without making any changes to your computer's hard drive. It's the perfect way to test drive Linux. For the best experience, we strongly recommend using a USB stick, as it's much faster and quieter than a DVD.
Will Linux work on my Mac?
Yes, most likely, if you have an Intel-based Mac (generally manufactured between 2013 and 2020). Distributions like Ubuntu and Fedora have excellent hardware support, though minor tweaks are sometimes needed.
No, if you have a newer Apple Silicon Mac (M1, M2, M3 chips, from late 2020 onwards). The standard Linux versions we sell are not compatible with this new architecture.
What's the difference between Ubuntu LTS and STS?
Think of it as choosing between maximum stability and the latest features.
- LTS (Long-Term Support): The Stable Choice. Released every 2 years, an LTS version gets 5 years of security updates. It's perfect for anyone who wants a reliable, "set it and forget it" system.
- STS (Short-Term Support): The Cutting Edge. Released every 6 months, an STS version includes the newest software and features but is only supported for 9 months. It's great for enthusiasts who love having the latest and greatest.
